Party of opportunity

Party of opportunity

In Ipswich we have known for a long time that the Lib Dems will say anything on the doorstep but then do anything the Tories want just for the chance of power (plus the extra pay as a Portfolio holder). Even during the election campaign in Ipswich I found a number of Lib Dem voters who thought that we were being unfair in our criticism of the local Lib Dem councillors, well now we can see that the Lib Dem MP's were also willing to say anything on the doorstep then once offered the chance of power with the Tories were willing to drop all their policies as they drove away in their ministerial cars. Local Lib Dem Councillors may find it harder this time to persuade voters that they are a party of principle.
A petition by failed Lib Dem parliamentary candidates (104 signing it but no Mark Dyson - failed Lib Dem Ipswich candidate) has now called on Lib Dem MP's to stick to their original pledge on student fees - wonder what notice Clegg, Cable and others will take of them?

Phoned Lib Dem Head Office and asked for copy of manifesto. They said they'd sold out. I said "I know, but can I have a manifesto?"

So Alasdair, how about Labour's manifesto promise not to introduce top up fees in the first place? Made in 2001, broken in 2001. Or Labour's manifesto commitment not to introduce tuition fees at all, made in 1997, broken in 1998. And don't forget the Libdems have history in Suffolk of cosying up to Labour just as much as cosying up to the Tories. Flip flops aren't just what they wear on their feet you know, it's their whole political outlook!

the opledge was to vote against any increase in fees in the next parliament and to presure the govenrnment to introduce a fairer alternative.

It is quite obvious by the wording of it that he was pledgeing to do this as part of the opposition and not part of the government.

You're altering what he said.Lib Dems a good at that too.

Your view is not the same as the Lib Dems- quote from their site:

There is one thing that sets the Liberal Democrats apart from other political parties; this is that when we say we will do something during election campaigns we then do it in government”
End Quote

That statement is briliant.

"There is one thing that sets the Liberal Democrats apart from other political parties; this is that when we say we will do something during election campaigns we then do it in government"

As if anybody is going to look back to see if Lloyd George's government didn't do things they said they'd do in government.

5 years and Broom Hill is still not open!

UCS (and new Suffolk College) was put there because of the Labour Govt, the Condems were not even keen on investing in UCS on the latest extension.

They did come together to vote thru Tescos - another nail in the town centre coffin

UAE would be here iif it wasn't for a Labour Coouncil saying they were happy with Suffolk College.

Tesco's is not going to kill the town centre.

Sorry, Alasdair, is this the same Broomhill that a Labour administration closed?
