This week has been both satisfying and difficult – the good part was being able to inform residents that their bus service (22 and 31) were not to be lost. The first cuts by the Tory run Suffolk County Council are starting to leak out (no mention in any Tory election leaflet) and subsidies to bus routes are one of the first cuts to hit Ipswich. The good news is that the 22 and 31 will be replaced by a new service – the 39 – though it does cease working earlier in the afternoon as it then moves to the County run school bus service later in the afternoon. I will continue to both fight with residents against these Tory cuts and also work with the Borough Council and Ipswich Buses to try and help in areas where a bus service is lost.
The frustrating part has been dealing with residents’ concerns about the building of the new supermarket on the ‘Golden Key’ site on Woodbridge Rd. Chaos is the best way to describe what Rushmere residents woke to on Monday morning. The traffic jams and chaos were not acceptable. Fortunately our new Labour County Councillor was onto the task straight away and managed to get the County Council to change part of the road layout.
We now have a further 6 weeks of this chaos on one of the town’s main arterial routes! We (Ipswich Borough Council) did turn down the planning application because of traffic concerns – Monday was just yet one more example of where we (and residents) were right. Pity the Government Inspector did not listen – or visit the site during term time!
But to finish on a positive note, was a pleasure to visit the Beverley/Whitby Rd Community 'Front garden' sale today - after the success of the 'Big Lunch' held on Brunswick Recreation Ground last week, it is nice to know that we live in a ward with a real community feel.

My week ahead, 13 - 19 May 2013

This week seemed strange, no doors to knock on, no leaflets to deliver but rather than being thankful for the rest I felt bored and also felt the need to be out campaigning. Good news for me is that we will (Ipswich Labour) be back on the doorstep this Saturday!
But I have managed to spend some of the week speaking to Rushmere residents, on Friday we had the launch of the ‘No Cold Call’ zone (NCZ) in Whitby Road. Now a certain Tory will say we are taking the credit for something that was the brainchild of our former Tory County Councillor! But the force behind the Whitby Road scheme was a resident (as it should be for the setting up of a NCZ) and Labour activist and she was assisted by our new County Councillor, Sandra Gage. Sandra had got a NCZ set up in Meadowvale Close and she was able to help the Whitby residents work alongside Suffolk Trading Standards to get the scheme operating. Our former Tory County Councillor has had nothing to do with the scheme.
The launch of the NCZ did give me a chance to ask the Treading Standard officers how they intended to implement the Suffolk Tory manifesto policy of a Suffolk wide NCZ – from their answers it seemed obvious that they had not been consulted on the proposal and secondly they did not think it would work!
On Wednesday we have the formal business of the Annual Council meeting, let’s just hope the Tories do not use it as they have in the past to make stupid little points of order!

This week I have had a number of meetings about providing youth activities on Rushmere Estate in 2013, I hope to be able to announce some good news about this in January.
Friday, I joined local community campaigners in Whitby Road. Gemma Farrow a local resident hopes to have Whitby Rd declared a ‘no cold call zone’. I went out with her on Friday to ask residents what they thought we were joined by local police, Suffolk trading standards plus Sandra Gage. Forget a slow down as we approach Christmas, the coming week looks like the busiest week so far this year. But the good news is that a number of those meetings are focused on improving our own part of North East Ipswich.
We also have Full Council on Wednesday and the Tories have proposed a motion that is centred on our plan to start building council houses again in Ipswich. This week I attended councillor training on Housing, and there is no doubt that the Tory/Lib Dems plans to cut housing benefits plus other changes to the benefit system are going to cause problems for may Ipswich residents and not just those living in social housing, The pilot schemes in Wakefield have seen residents who have never before been in debt find it hard to keep up with their renal payments.
The Housing department at Ipswich are going to find there services and skills are needed more than ever as people find they become homeless.
It seems strange that the Tories in Government are so willing to penalise those who may have one bedroom more than they think they should have but at the same time ask rich donors for large sums to fight against any proposals for a ‘Mansion’ tax.
We have over the last day a leading Ipswich Tory state that it is right to reduce housing benefit as we all have to share the pain – have not heard her say we should have a ‘mansion’ tax and that the rich should share the pain. It was also a concern to me that the local Tory lead on Housing was not able or did not feel he needed to attend the councillor training on housing this week.

Road safety in Whitby Road , Ipswich
Whitby /Beverley Road News
Over the last month a number of residents have been in contact about installing white lines at the Beverley Road/Whitby Road junction.
Give way lines are not always needed on residential streets. However, at this junction it is not as obvious who has right of way and with the proximity of the junction to Sidegate Primary School, the road safety concerns raised by residents have been considered.
Sandra Gage, one of our local campaigners, and myself approached the council highways department to ask that new give way lines were introduced at the Beverley Road/Whitby Road junction. Last week those lines were painted onto the roads. I am sure this will help improve road safety for not only residents but also the young children and their parents who walk along Whitby Road.
Sandra has also brought to my attention the need for more road safety measures at both the Khartoum/Woodbridge Rd junction and the Leopold/Rushmere Road junction. We have approached the council to see what we can do in those streets.

Brunswick Road- Garage site now cleared
In April I blogged about the long drawn out case of trying to get an untidy site in Rushmere Ward cleared up by the owners. In the end Ipswich Borough Council had to use the threat of legal action against the owner to get a promise that the site would be cleared. The garages are located between Brunswick Road and Belvedere Road (near Whitby Road) and the site is owned by local firm Elizabeth Holdings.If you follow this link you can see what the site did look like.
You can now see that the site has been cleared, but I am still comcerned that the tyres have just been pushed into the garages so still a hazard to residents if the site was to catch fire.
The local Tories have attempted to take credit for the clearance, I do believe that the only reason the site was cleaned up by the owner was because the council were prepared to go to court. I am sure residents are not concerned who got the area cleaned but are just happy that it has been dealt with.

Fly tipping off Brunswick Road
A number of residents have asked for an update on the action the council took against the owner of the garages located between Belvedere, Brunswick and Whitby Road
The council served an untidy site notice against the owners in December but as most of you know, the owners have failed to clean up the site.
I have been in contact with the Council Officers and it has now been agreed that the council will now take the matter to Court and look to gain a prosecution.
What we do want to see as residents is that the area is cleaned up and does not become a location used by fly-tippers.
The council will also inspect a tree by the garages; it seems to have died and now constitutes a hazard to a number of residents in Belvedere Road.
Taking a landlord to court is not something that either the council or myself wanted but it seems we have no other option in this case.
There has been an increase in fly tipping all over Suffolk, not helped by the Tory run Suffolk County Council closing waste sites all over the county. The site at Chelmondiston has announced that it will close next month.

BNP in Ipswich- not needed, not wanted.
Saturday morning was spent in Roundwood Road with local activists and our Labour MP- Chris Mole. The rain kept off and we managed to speak to a number of residents, and hopefully help sort out a number of issues that the residents mentioned, these included speeding and parking. Roundwood Road is used as an access point to Sidegate Primary, so traffic and parking is a concern to residents and also to the many parents who use this entrance.
Sue Thomas our Labour County councilor has used her locality budget to have school signs and "slow" markings placed on the road. this week we managed to get a barrier placed at the end of the path to the school, this should stop any children running straight out into the road.
This is what local politics is all about- not what happened later in Rushmere ward, last night in Whitby Road and today in my own road we have found BNP leaflets pushed through our door. No local content but just an A5 leaflet full of lies. You can see how these lies play on peoples concerns and worries.
In the 70's there was little sign of the National Front in Ipswich and this is the first time I have seen a BNP leaflet in Rushmere. But it is a worry that BNP leaflets were also seen in the west of the town earlier in the month.
There is no place in Ipswich for the fascist BNP, it is up to all of the three main political parties to combat the threat of the Far Right.
I hope any Rushmere residents have put the leaflet where it belongs- the blue bin!
